With the goal of our Commack general dentist, Steven R. Feigelson, DDS, being to help our patients function as active, healthy, adults, he will educate our patients on the advantages of dentures. Tooth loss can be remarkably improved with dentures, as well as enhancing your appearance and well-being. A denture is a removable prosthesis replacing some or all of the missing teeth in your dental arch. The denture development process takes about three to six weeks, over several appointments. Once Dr. Feigelson establishes what type of appliance is best for you, measurements will be taken as well as a series of jaw impressions. From these impressions, wax forms, models, and plastic patterns will be made, in the exact shape and position of the denture. We will have you try this model on several times and the denture will be evaluated for color, shape, and fit before the final denture is cast.
Full dentures, conventional or immediate, are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some of your natural teeth still remain. A conventional denture is ready to be placed inside your mouth about 8 to 12 weeks after your teeth have been removed, and when your gum tissue has begun to heal. Immediate dentures have been made in advance and can be positioned as soon as your teeth are removed. Our Commack general dentist wants to be sure that you do not have to be without teeth during the healing period.
Even though dentures are not real teeth, you need to care for them as if they are. Before removing them, you should brush your dentures to remove food particles and plaque. Once they are clean and have been removed, you should immediately place them into room temperature water or a denture cleaning solution. Hot water may warp your dentures so should never be used. Dentures can also be damaged by attempting to adjust them yourself so you should always seek assistance from our Commack general dentist if they feel uncomfortable or loose. Dr. Feigelson, along with our dedicated staff, are committed to providing an exceptional, personalized patient experience. We will work with you so you can make an educated choice as to whether dentures are best for you.
